I grew up in a small town in south central Missouri. We didn’t have a lot, we moved often as my parents struggled with jobs and landlords, and I got used to it. Living in small, older houses on little income with three or four children living at home, my mother was frugal and she did her best to feed and clothe us. Needless to say, we shared a lot of hand-me-downs and beds and bathrooms.
Over the years of growing up, now in my second marriage and four children under my belt, I do my best to provide a nice home, food in the pantry and decent clothes for my kids as well. It has been difficult at times. My husband has been in road construction most of our marriage and we have moved a lot to follow his work, but I have been lucky to fit into where ever we have gone. Job changes can be hard and may sometimes take a while, which hurts the pocketbook.
In any sense, I try to be frugal as well. I try to save any way I can by using coupons, buying generic brands and settling for the not-so-name-brand clothes. And I’m not too proud to buy used. Why buy new if you can get something like new for half price, or less-than-half the price?
This brings me to Thrifty Innovations and The Thrifty Shed. As I said I have four children, two who are still at home. A boy and girl, six years apart, hand-me-downs don’t work so well. I work in an office type environment, and if I don’t “grow” out of my work clothes, sometimes I just need a change. But I refuse to pay top dollar for even my work clothes. Small appliances and household items come and go, but stuff collects!!
